Statistics for National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB) Medical Malpractice Payment Reports (MMPR) and Adverse Action Reports (AAR) reported on all practitioners by location for the years 2002-2012. Review the methods and definitions.
Statistical Data - Tabular Statistical Data
All counts are based on NPDB calendar year data for years 2002 through 2012. Inflation Adjustment provided by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Statistical Data - Trend Plots
Trend plots show the number of NPDB reports by type for 2002-2012.
Medical Malpractice Payment and Adverse Action Report totals are based on NPDB aggregate data through calendar year 2012.
Adverse Action Year was used for Adverse Action Reports and Medical Malpractice Payment Year was used for Malpractice Reports.
Licensure includes State Licensure Actions; Clinical Privilege and Panel Membership includes Clinical Privilege Actions and Clinical Panel Membership Actions; Society Membership includes Professional Society Membership Actions. DEA and HHS Exclusion includes Drug Enforcement Administration Actions and HHS OIG Exclusion Actions.
Census Population count is based on U.S. Census Bureau data.
Physician Population count is based on Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) data.
NPDB population count is the number of distinct practitioners.
Inflation Adjustment is provided by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Note: References to the National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB) data on this page refer to a subset of NPDB data prior to the NPDB and HIPDB merger implementation date of May 6, 2013. Pre-merger NPDB data include reports collected under the authority of Title IV of Public Law 99-660 or Section 1921 of the Social Security Act, and 45 CFR Part 60 as enforced prior to May 6, 2013.
