Is proctoring reportable to the NPDB?

It depends. If the proctoring is the result of a professional review action and restricts the practitioner's privileges for more than 30 days, than proctoring is reportable. However, there are situations where proctoring would not be reportable, including:

  1. The proctoring is for a period of less than 30 days;
  2. The proctoring is part of an entity's standard operating procedure, for example, when bringing a new physician on board; and therefore is not the result of a professional review action; or
  3. The proctor is not required to give permission or to be present before the practitioner can perform the action.
